In the summer of 2016, I was living in Minneapolis, Minnesota - my home for 14 years - and soon I’d be moving to Los Angeles. Before this new chapter began, I needed a reset. Tickets to Japan were purchased, my departure set for June. In preparation for the trip I read The Temple of the Golden Pavilion by Yukio Mishima. This book tackles relationships - between people and between ourselves and the ethics and forces around us. The story of love and the unattainable planted the seed that would eventually become Gloria.
I arrived in Tokyo on a hot, sunny day. I took the bullet train to the quiet, yet rich, hills and rivers of Kyoto. I walked in the rain and felt the grit of Osaka. My heart was heavy in the vibrant, solemn city of Hiroshima. What I experienced in Japan was a place so different from everything I knew.
In the fall of 2016, after moving to Los Angeles, feelings of ostracization and loneliness brought me back to memories of Japan, and back to Mishima’s work. By early 2017, Gloria was written.
A year later, in the summer of 2018, I returned to Minneapolis from LA on a brief trip to record a single, with the help of my good friends and collaborators Brett Bullion and Jeff Sundquist. After laying out dozens of songs, we decided there was something special about Gloria (Brief Moments of Fleeting Joy). The recording tells a story of someone longing for love and redemption, while grappling with regret through the lens self awareness. Producer Brett Bullion and I put all we had into the session, and at 4am in Minneapolis, nearly two years removed from my visit to Japan, we got the take. One take, no edits, no tuning. Two people communicating through music. Now, over a year removed, Gloria is going to be released for the world to hear.
It’s been a long road for one song and one recording, but some things take time - and there must be a reason for that.

lyrics
Meet me under the cherry blossom trees
I'll make it up to you
When they're blooming
Is when I'll be there
I've left you waiting long enough
Do you see the light?
The explosions of my heart
Just beyond the pond
Gloria
Gloria
The glory of
Brief moments of fleeting joy
Gloria
Gloria
The glory of
Brief moments of fleeting joy
I'm not stupid
Maybe slow to learn
I should have never
Put you down like that
You told me break free
From all the books I've read
And all the women I've known
You told me break free
And I'm trying to be someone
Who understands
Gloria
Gloria
The glory of
Brief moments of fleeting joy
Gloria
Gloria
The glory of
Brief moments of fleeting joy
Let's watch it burn
Watch it burn
Watch it cover all the gold
Let's watch it burn
Watch it burn
Watch it burn
Let's watch it burn
Watch it burn
Watch it burn
